Bronco at 12 Months

This is it. The last of Bronco's monthly posts. Cue the "how is my baby already a year old??!" tears! Seriously, though. How has it already been a year??! The days & weeks (especially the nights...) sometimes dragged on...but now that I look back, I feel like the past year flew by in the blink of an eye!

Oh how we love our Bronco! He filled a void that we didn't know existed--and he instantly became an integral part of our family; our family would never be complete without him. He brings us all together in a way I never thought possible. When Tucker & Calvin are fighting, when Curt and/or I are in a bad mood, when we're all upset and frustrated--Bronco is the ray of sunshine that can (& always does) turn everything around. I'm constantly amazed at how unified & happy we all are when we're trying to get him to laugh or teaching him to crawl or watching him learn some new thing. It is so fun and rewarding. I love our little family so much--and I am so glad Bronco is a part of it!!

Anyway, on to formalities.

Here is Bronco's 12 month bear picture:
(I'm so glad this was our last month doing pictures with the bear, because it was nearly impossible to get him to sit still long enough,
and leave the bear somewhat alone long enough, to take this!)

Compared to last month at 11 months:

And here is the past year of bear pictures all compiled together:
So fun to see the comparisons!!
It makes the hassle of taking a picture with the bear every month, totally worth it.

Here are his one-year stats:

Weight: 20 lbs 4.5 oz (33%)
Height: 31 inches (89%)

He is our first baby to be over the 20-pound mark by his first birthday & have the highest percentiles! (Calvin & Tucker were both 18 lbs and in the 3% and 1% for weight, respectively.) And check out Bronco's height! Maybe there's some hope that he got some of the Smith genes! ;)

Biggest developments/changes in the past month:
- He finally started crawling!! (and he gets into EVERYTHING!!)
- He officially dropped his middle-of-the-night/early morning feeding and is sleeping 12+ hrs through the night!
- He stopped taking his reflux medicine completely!
- I took away his middle-of-the-day nursing, and he's down to just the morning and night feedings
- First official word: cracker

EATING:
- He is very much attached to nursing right now, which surprises me. Around 7/8/9 months, he would have nursing strikes every few days, and I was about ready to throw in the towel and just wean him...but we hung in there, and now I'm having a hard time getting him to stop. I took away his middle-of-the-day nursing about a week after he turned 11 months, and he did okay, but it was pretty clear that he missed it. Now when he nurses in the morning (right when he wakes up) and night (right before bed), nothing will distract him--he won't pull off for anything. Tucker & Calvin could be talking and trying to get his attention, and he wouldn't care. In some ways, I'm loving these quiet moments when he'll stay still and snuggle with me (since he's so active & on the move now that he's crawling), but in other ways, I'm just ready to be done with nursing all together. In the last few days I've been having him eat only on one side, instead of both, and I plan on stopping all together sometime soon. But for whatever reason, it's just hard when I see how attached to it he is!
- Another reason I'm hesitating to stop nursing all together is because I can't get him to drink cow's milk for anything! Both Tucker & Calvin took to cow's milk with no problem, so I'm struggling with what to do about Bronco. I gave it to him a few days before his birthday, and he seemed to like it just fine, but then I thought it was giving him diarrhea (turns out it was just a little bug going around our family), so I stopped giving him milk & pushed water pretty hard instead. So then he took to water, and when I tried giving him milk again a few days later, he refused it altogether. I try to trick him by giving it to him in different kinds of cups & sippee cups, and even mixing it in with cereal or oatmeal or other foods--but after one taste, he refuses to even open his mouth again. Such a little stinker! So the good news is that he LOVES water, which neither Tucker or Calvin ever really liked, and my pediatrician says that water should be his #1 drink anyway, so I guess we'll just work with it. And I'll just keep trying to sneak milk in wherever I can, haha.
- He has started becoming very picky with what he eats, and it's getting pretty frustrating. He spits foods out that he doesn't like, and then he refuses to eat them again. My biggest battle with him is breakfast. The only consistent thing he'll eat is a whole banana (cut up into pieces, of course)--and then I struggle getting him to eat anything else, even though he's still hungry. He won't eat cereal or toast, and he'll only occasionally eat oatmeal or pancakes or waffles. He'll usually eat a sausage patty, but I don't want to give him that every single morning! Silly boy. Breakfast has always been the easiest meal for Tucker & Calvin--it's their favorite--so Bronco not liking breakfast foods has been weird for me.
- His favorite foods right now, by far, are fruits. He LOVES bananas and canned peaches & pears. Strawberries give him the runs, which is sad. Hopefully he'll grow out of that. His favorite veggies are canned green beans, carrots, and peas, and he's pretty good about eating them. He likes Ritz crackers and he LOVES mac & cheese, and he usually likes yogurt and string cheese. Everything else is hit or miss.
- He's starting to drop food  off the side of his high chair that he doesn't like, or just when he wants some attention. Love this stage. (not)
- I haven't had much time to teach him/have the patience for him to learn using a spoon yet...but it's something I need to work on. I let him try to feed himself some yogurt with a spoon the other day, and it was a mess (and I don't think he got any in his mouth)! Definitely something we need to work on...

SLEEPING:
- He's doing great with sleeping through the night! (7:00/7:30 pm to 7:00/7:30 am) There was one week that he randomly woke up at 6:00 am every day & was up for the day, but then a few days later he went back to waking up at his usual 7:00/7:30, thank goodness.
- He still takes two naps--one at 9:00/9:15 and one at 1:30/1:45. Sometimes he plays in his crib for awhile before falling asleep, but then he sleeps anywhere from 1-2.5 hrs.
- We LOVE having him in a crib in his own room--it is so wonderful!
- Watching him on the video monitor is hilarious--he rolls around so much in his sleep.

MOBILITY:
- He is a crawling ninja and gets into EVERYTHING. He used to just crawl around, following us from room to room, but now he ventures out on his own and will explore any and every room all on his own--getting into and leaving a string of messes along the way. He loves to open drawers, cupboards, etc, and it's actually cute to watch his little curiosity bloom. As long as I/we try to keep up with cleaning the messes, it's not too bad.
- He does not pull up to his feet yet or have any desire to walk. (though he does pull up to his knees) I can force him to stand holding onto the couch or something, but he gets sick of it and sits down pretty quickly; he doesn't even try to move his feet to cruise along. I'm not too worried--this is exactly how Calvin was at this age--but my pediatrician is worried and wants to start him on some early-intervention stuff. She's giving me six weeks to work on it on our own, and then she's going to have someone come to the house and evaluate him. So we're trying to encourage him to stand and pull himself up to his feet as much as we can.!

OTHER RANDOM THINGS:
- He's becoming much more vocal--he talks/babbles all the time, and he screams when he wants something/doesn't want something.
- His first official word is "cracker" (pronounced "ack ack"--and he uses it for pretty much any form of food, haha).
- He's starting to sign "more" when he wants something--usually in relation to wanting a drink of water.
- He still claps and folds his arms for prayers (not every time though)
- He laughs whenever we laugh--especially when the boys laugh. So cute!
- Loves to read stories before his naps, and he loves turning the pages by himself.
- He's starting to dance to music; love it!!
- He loves, loves to crawl around with some long object in his mouth--his favorites are a whistle or a sucker.

- He loves to crawl under & around things--so an obvious favorite would be the kitchen table with all the chair legs. (he often gets stuck and cries for help to get out, but then he goes right back in, haha)
- He loves to lay on his belly to try to reach things underneath something. It is so hilarious!

- Still has the 8 teeth (4 on top, 4 on bottom), but I keep expecting more to pop through anytime now. I feel like he's been super fussy/teething the last few weeks, and his gums seem pretty swollen, so I sure hope he has something to show for it sometime soon!
- His version of kisses is what we refer to as "Bronco Bonks"--where he softly bonk heads with someone else. We can't get him to give us legit "kisses" for anything, but he gives out Bronco Bonks very lovingly and whenever we ask. :)
- Wears size 12-18 month clothes, size 4 diapers.

Oh how we love this little boy!! Still can't believe he's a year old!!

11 Months...!!

Bronco is 11 months! ELEVEN months??!! Just one month away from being a year old! The time is seriously going so fast. TOO fast! But it is so fun watching him learn and grow, and we LOVE this age!!!

Here is his 11 month bear picture:

Compared to 10 months:

These bear pictures are getting harder & harder to take. He used to sit there happily & not move too much, but this month he was CRAZY! Tucker & Calvin were helping me get him to smile, and in the process Bronco decided he wanted OFF the couch & wanted to play with all the toys they were holding. It was both parts hilarious & frustrating. :)

Most of the pictures ended up looking something like this:
There are seriously about 50 pictures of him like this. It really is a miracle we got one of him smiling at the camera, and somewhat in focus!

Here's another picture, just showing him in comparison to the bear better. (before he started smiling)
He is getting so BIG!!!

Anyway, on to the formalities.

Biggest developments in the past month:
- We dropped a daytime nursing last week, so now he's down to 3 times during the day (morning, before his afternoon nap, and before bed).
- I think we MIGHT just be there with dropping that middle-of-the-night feeding--last night he slept 12 hours through the night for the first time! He's been waking up between 5:30-6:30 AM for the last two weeks, wanting to eat, and then he goes back to sleep...but then he's not hungry & doesn't want to nurse when he wakes up for the day at 7:30. He's wasn't starving when he woke up early in the morning, so I knew he didn't really NEED to eat yet--but since he doesn't take a pacifier, I didn't really have any way to soothe him back to sleep & he just cried if I didn't feed him. Yesterday morning I decided to not feed him and let him just cry it out (I went in to try to rock him back to sleep without feeding him, and he got super upset!), and he cried from 5:30-6:15, and then fell back to sleep and slept until 7:30. And then last night he slept from 7:15-7:15 without any waking up in the early morning hours!!! So I'm hopeful that that might be it?? We'll see how it plays out. But regardless--I think it's just a matter of a days before he's consistently sleeping 12 hours through the night!! Hallelujah!!!
- He's almost completely weaned off his reflux medicine. I've been giving him a lower dosage only once a day for the past few weeks, and he's been doing great with it (he only spits up like maybe once a day). I figure we'll just keep doing that and finish off the bottle, since it's almost out. Yay!!
- He's completely done with baby food--he wants nothing to do with it anymore (even the baby oatmeal I've been giving him for breakfast every day). He wants big person food, and he wants to feed himself. (and he's starting to develop definite likes & dislikes for certain foods)
- We finally moved him out of the mini pack-n-play in our closet, into his OWN room--with a full-sized crib!! He has LOVED all the extra space--so much so that it's been a struggle to get him to fall asleep for his naps the last few days; he loves to just roll around & sit up & play with the bumper pads...for hours on end! He's slowly decreasing the amount of time he "plays" before he falls asleep, so I'm sure this is just an adjustment period, and he'll go back to falling asleep quickly after the newness of the crib wears off. It's so crazy to see him in the big crib--he looks so small in all that space!

Here he is in our closet--this has been his "room" for the past 11 months.
Poor little guy was definitely out of space!

Regardless of how we laid him down, he always ended up laying along the short side & being super squished. So sad!

Here he is in the crib. Loving all the space & loving life!

(More details about the big move and pictures of the new room to come!)

Other things going on:
- he's following Calvin's footsteps in that he's STILL not crawling!! (Calvin didn't crawl until 3 weeks before his first birthday...we'll see if Bronco beats that by a few days or waits even longer...) Bronco is so, SO close--but he just can't get his legs figured out yet; he can scoot, reach, roll, and pull himself to get wherever he wants, it just takes some time (and frustration). I keep expecting him to finally crawl any day now--we'll see!
- still doesn't have any desire to stand or pull himself up on anything...
- sleeps on his stomach now more often than not, and in other crazy positions (we love watching him on the new video monitor we got for Christmas!)

- can go from his stomach to sitting up, and does it all the time now in his crib
- still takes two naps at 9:00 AM and 1:30 PM, and usually sleeps for 1.5-2 hrs each
- learned how to clap & fold his arms for prayer a few weeks ago--and it is SO cute; he claps almost any time you say "good job" or "yay!" (and a lot of times he confuses clapping for folding his arms, haha)

(ignore my dumb commentary...)

- shakes his head "no" all the time--I don't think he has any idea what it means yet, but it's pretty cute :)
- he loves to play the dropping game & thinks it's hilarious to drop things over and over and over...
- babbles and talks all day--so, so cute

- LOVES to laugh, especially at funny noises
- is a pro at feeding himself, and he literally stuffs his face (making himself choke sometimes) when he's super hungry
- he eats SO MUCH FOOD; he out-eats the big boys quite often (just eating normal table food)--and it has me very worried with what our food budget is going to be in a couple years...!!
- has re-kindled his love for nursing; the last few months he would go on nursing strikes every few days & was too interested in everything else to want to nurse; but for the last month he has started loving nursing again--which is nice that he doesn't put up a fuss, but he takes a lot longer, and it's making it harder for when I'm starting to wean him (he had a pretty hard time when I took away one of the middle-of-the-day feedings)
- goes through phases of being obsessed with random things; for a couple of days he was obsessed with sticking out his tongue, and then for another couple of days he did this scrunch-nosed face all the time--so funny!

Scrunch-nosed face:

- get's super excited when he sees something he wants--he starts flapping his arms & breathing really heavy & quickly...it's hilarious
- loves to throw himself back & hang upside down when we're holding him--LOVES it!
- still happy to just sit and play with toys all day long, though now he maneuvers himself around and is starting to get into cords, drawers, etc that he shouldn't be getting into ;)
- wears mostly 12 month clothes, size 3 diapers (though he's starting to soak through his diapers at night now that he sleeps on his stomach)

He somehow rolled himself completely into the closet the other day, haha:

LOVE this picture:

Oh how we love this little boy!!! He is the cutest little thing, and continues to bring us all so much joy. We love you, Bronco!

Bronco at 10 Months

Oh my goodness--we love this little boy SO much!! He is the cutest, sweetest, happiest thing ever. We all just adore him! It's hard to believe he's been with us for 10 months already; and yet, we can't imagine our family without him. He is the perfect addition.

Bronco at 10 Months:

Compared to last month at 9 months:

Biggest developments in the past month:
- started sleeping 11/11.5 hrs through the night every few days--he's done it 5 or 6 times in the last two weeks! (makes me SO excited to think we're getting close to consistent sleeping through the night! such a crazy transformation from getting up 2-3 times a night just two months ago!)
- another tooth popped through this week, making 8 (!!!) total--4 on top, 4 on bottom
- started becoming very interested in moving around--wants to be crawling so bad! (though still not there yet)
- first hair cut!

I finally caved & gave him a hair cut (trim) the other day (12.15.14) when cutting the bigger boys' hair. I've been putting it off, not wanting him to lose his baby look, but it was getting a little out of control! I took off as little as I could, and I think it turned out well. But he still looks older & it makes me sad!

Before:
(Yes, I messed it up to make it look more messy...but definitely still out of control!

After:

Since Curt was at work, I had Tucker document the haircut taking pictures on my phone.

EATING;
- hardly any baby food anymore
- starting to eat (& wants to eat) whatever we're eating
- is a pro at feeding himself; I love watching him!
- still nurses 4 times a day (7:30 am, 11:00 am, 3:00 pm, 7:00 pm) and once during the night (anywhere from 3-5 am)...but he's getting ready to drop a daytime nursing

First time trying new foods: mac & cheese / hot dogs

Carrots--always a favorite

SLEEPING:
- still goes to bed about 7:00/7:30 pm and wakes up about 7:30 every morning (with one nursing break)...except on the nights he sleeps 11/11.5 hrs through the night, he wakes up about 6:30/6:45
- takes two consistent naps a day (LOVING the consistency!) at 9:00 am & 1:30 pm, usually sleeps for about 1.5 hrs each

MOBILITY;
- wants to get around a lot more, but still won't get up on his hands and knees to try crawling (whenever we put him in that position, he just flattens out on his tummy)--but he reaches, scoots, rolls, pushes, etc to get where he wants & can usually get there after awhile if he doesn't get too frustrated first ;)
- doesn't pull up on anything yet, or even want to stand up with us holding him

TEMPERAMENT:
- so sweet, and so so happy (& SO SO cute!)
- loves to laugh
- loves to make random noises (he'll learn to make a new noise & do it all the time for a few days, and then he'll move on to another sound)
- cries the cutest, most broken-hearted cry when you set him down or take something away from him; it's so cute & so sad!
- is very into toys right now & loves to just sit & play

MISCELLANEOUS:
- LOVES to play with balls & will kind of play "catch" with the boys
- loves to take baths & splash in the big bathtub
- babbles all day long
- says "mama" all the time, and I like to think he's starting to understand what it means :)
- responds to his name
- still takes medicine for reflux, but I'm going to start trying to wean him again soon
- poops multiple times a day (making up for when he was a newborn & only pooped once a week...)
- wears size 3 diapers, 9-12 month clothes

We just love this little boy so much!!!
