15 Questions - Calvin (5 years old)

I've debated whether or not to keep doing these yearly interviews, since I obviously struggle getting them done on, or anytime even near, their birthdays, haha. But once again, it's something I enjoy looking back on. So I'm going to keep trying to do them...even if I'm 3 months late...!

Oh, and the 25 questions seemed way too long, so I shortened it down to 15. Not that anyone cares. ;)

This video shows Calvin perfectly--fun and crazy, always moving, very methodical when he doesn't know the answer to something

1. Favorite Food?
Kiwi (random thing that he really likes right now - I'd say his overall favorite food is pizza)
2. Favorite Game or Activity?
Snakes & ladders (favorite game) / Minecraft (favorite all-time activity...as in, he's completely obsessed)
3. Favorite Song?
Gethsemane (favorite primary song)
4. Favorite Book?
The Pout Pout Fish
5. Favorite Movie or TV show?
Blues Clues (favorite TV show--super random he said that because we hardly ever watch it??) / Scooby Doo Meets Batman (favorite movie)
6. Favorite part of school?
Playtime
7. Who are your best friends?
Ryan & Brady, Karli & Ashley & Lexie
8. What do you want to be when you grow up?

Play games (he loves to play games!)

13. What makes you happy?
Doing funny stuff (he loves to act silly, do potty talk, etc...)
14. What makes you sad?
"I don't know" (he's very sensitive and gets his feelings hurt when someone is talking about him or makes fun of him somehow; he gets really upset and cries when he doesn't know what to do and/or doesn't understand the instructions for something)
15. What's something you'd like to learn?
How to find iron ore and golden ore on Minecraft (Minecraft is ALWAYS on his mind!)

Obviously Bronco couldn't answer these on his own, haha, so I took the liberty of answering them myself. :)

Pretty much any fruit (grapes, strawberries, pineapple, bananas, oranges, apples, blueberries, raisins, etc)--he'll even choose fruit over dessert a lot of the time!
2. Favorite Game or Activity?
Getting into and making a mess of everything...or stealing food from the pantry
3. Favorite Song?
Follow the Prophet - he used to sit in the back of primary with Curt before he was old enough for nursery, and he learned this song as I was teaching it to everyone last year (I'm the primary chorister), and it's been his favorite every since

15. What's something you'd like to learn?
How to be potty trained; he's showing signs that he's ready (he wakes up dry most mornings, he wants privacy when he's pooping, and he tells me almost every time he goes pee)...but I'm not sure I'm ready yet...! (we'll probably wait until the middle of summer after our vacations are over)

Here's a video showing him reading along/doing actions for the minion movie about a month ago:

Calvin - 25 Questions (3 Years Old)

I've been looking forward to doing Calvin's first version of 25 questions with his own answers. (The goal is to ask each child these questions every year around their birthday, starting at age 3, just for fun.) I was debating whether or not to do a video as I asked the questions...but I figured he would probably lose interest before I finished all the questions & I'd have to come back and ask him the rest later. I was right. :)

So I don't have a video showing his cute responses, but I have them recorded below:

  1. What is your favorite color? pink & purple (pretty sure he says this just because it gets a rise out of Tucker...telling him those are girl colors)
  2. What is your favorite toy? cars
  3. What is your favorite TV show? Word World
  4. What is your favorite thing to eat? sausage & eggs
  5. What is your favorite thing to wear? shirts
  6. What is your favorite game? hide & seek
  7. What is your favorite dessert? "poop treats when I go poop in the potty"
  8. What is your favorite animal? a tiger
  9. What is your favorite song?  I Am a Child of God
  10. What is your favorite book? Green Eggs & Ham
  11. Who is your best friend? Brady
  12. What is your favorite cereal? Super Why Alphabet cereal (not sure why he said this...we haven't had that cereal in months! what he really likes is Frosted Mini Wheats, which he calls "breaky cereal")
  13. What is your favorite thing to do outside? run outside
  14. What is your favorite thing to drink? strawberry milk
  15. What do you want to be when you grow up? a ambulance guy
  16. What are you afraid of? monsters
  17. What’s your favorite thing to do as a family? family hugs & Smith family cheer
  18. What’s your favorite activity to do? play
  19. What makes you happy? "when we go at Ryan's house"
  20. What makes you sad? "I don't know!"
  21. What is your favorite movie? Despicable Me 2
  22. What is your favorite scripture story? "uhhh...scripture games" (apparently we need to help him understand the stories a little better...)
  23. What is your favorite thing to do with Mom? go shopping (poor kid...you can tell what he & I usually do while Tucker is at preschool)
  24. What is your favorite thing to do with Dad? climb on him
  25. What is something you’d like to learn? how to draw a treasure hunt

Weight - 32 lbs (54%)
Height - 37 inches (37%)

At three years old, Calvin is so fun & funny...and also becoming more defiant & stubborn, with his own opinions. He has such complex thoughts & speaks so clearly--sometimes I feel like he's so much older than three! He is starting to defend himself & fight back more with Tucker--which is both good to see after watching Tucker pick on him so much, but sad that they get in to some pretty real fights now.

He is starting to drop his nap; he's getting to the point where he only naps 2-3 days a week, but when he does sleep, he's usually out for at least 3 hours. When he doesn't fall asleep, he still stays in his room for about 2 hours & entertains himself doing who knows what. (sometimes I give him toys & activities, and sometimes he just entertains himself.) He can play on his own & entertain himself with toys way more than Tucker ever has--and he doesn't care about TV nearly as much as Tucker does.

Even though he's been potty trained for 8 months, we still struggle off & on with going poop in the potty. For whatever reason, he goes through spurts when he doesn't like to tell us when he needs to go, and we have to try to catch him by his facial expressions & get him to go. We'll have a hard week or two, and then he'll be fine for a couple weeks. We're definitely looking forward to moving past this someday...

He loves to watch Tucker & mimic/try to do everything he does. He is learning his letters pretty well & starting to remember some of the sounds they make--thanks to Tucker learning how to read & trying to help Calvin learn. And he finally has his colors down, after mixing up yellow & red for awhile (still does occasionally). We signed him up to start preschool in the fall, and he's pretty excited about it!

He is currently obsessed with the word "actually." We're pretty sure he will say the wrong thing on purpose, just so he can say "actually..." right after. Examples - Mom: "What cereal would you like for breakfast?" Calvin: "Cheerios. Actually...I would like breaky cereal." Mom: "Calvin, do you need to go potty?" Calvin: "No. Actually...I do." :) He makes us laugh all the time!

He is still the sweetest little boy (most of the time--he can still be a stinker) & he gives the best hugs. It's fun to watch him as a big brother to Bronco--he still tries to make him happy whenever he cries, and he often goes over to just look at Bronco and says, "Mom, he's so cute!" :)

We love Calvin so much & are so glad to have him in our family!

Tucker - 25 Questions (5 Years Old)

Remember the 25 questions I plan on asking each of our kids on their birthdays? Well, I'm a few weeks late, but here is Tucker's 5-year-old installment.

He was actually really excited for me to interview him, and he cooperated perfectly.

  1. What is your favorite color? red
  2. What is your favorite toy? pteranodon wings
  3. What is your favorite TV show? Team Umizoomi
  4. What is your favorite thing to eat? chocolate treats
  5. What is your favorite thing to wear? new shirts
  6. What is your favorite game? Battleship
  7. What is your favorite dessert? ice cream
  8. What is your favorite animal? cheetah
  9. What is your favorite song?  "Follow the Prophet" (Adam was a prophet)
  10. What is your favorite book? Jillian Jiggs
  11. Who is your best friend? Ryan (Bellows) & Evey (Tedjamulia)
  12. What is your favorite cereal? Fruit Loops
  13. What is your favorite thing to do outside? ride bikes
  14. What is your favorite thing to drink? milk
  15. What do you want to be when you grow up? a palentologist who studies dinosaurs
  16. What are you afraid of? monsters
  17. What’s your favorite thing to do as a family? ride bikes
  18. What’s your favorite activity to do? ride bikes
  19. What makes you happy? Rainbow Bear & shark (his stuffed animals)
  20. What makes you sad? when people snatch & do bad things
  21. What is your favorite movie? Cars 1 & Cars 2
  22. What is your favorite scripture story? when Nephi built the ship
  23. What is your favorite thing to do with Mom? play Chutes & Ladders
  24. What is your favorite thing to do with Dad? build wooden 3D dinosaurs
  25. What is something you’d like to learn? what's a rock & what's a dinosaur bone & what's a fossil

His answers pretty much describe what he's like right now at 5 years old--but here's a little more:

He loves dinosaurs, is getting more mature and is starting to be more obedient, tries his best to choose the right but still sometimes has troubles, still throws tantrums every once in awhile, tries to be a good big brother & fights with Calvin a little less, is very methodical & thinks things through quite thoroughly, loves to learn, and still hates being told what to do or forced to do something. :) He is enjoying preschool but complains that it's too much for little kids & wants to go to "big kid" school--we're finding that he does best when he's challenged enough that something isn't easy, but not too hard that it seems impossible to him. Our biggest accomplishment in the past month is that he is finally able to stay dry at night! For the longest time he has been a really deep sleeper & just couldn't wake up to go to the bathroom, so he had to wear a pull up every night. We tried all kinds of different things, and what finally worked was for us to wake him up & take him to the bathroom when we go to bed--around 11:00 or so. This somehow triggered his brain to learn to wake up, and now he can wake up on his own to go (though we still take him to the bathroom when we go to bed, just to be safe). He loves being a true big boy & not having to wear diapers anymore at all, and we love it too!! Hallelujah!

He is definitely turning into a mature, fun, and smart little boy. We are loving watching him learn & grow, and we're so glad to have him as a part of our family. We love you, Tucker!

Calvin at age 2

(can't get enough of those big brown eyes & adorably puckered little lips...)

Weight: 27 lbs even (37%)
Height: 33.5 inches (34%)

We love having Calvin in our family. He is so fun and sweet, and yet so mischievous and loud at the same time. He is definitely his own person, with his own thoughts & opinions, and his own little personality. And we love him so much for it!!!

It's hard to believe we've had two kids for two years now. Most of the time I feel like I have the hang of it and we're doing great, but every once in awhile we'll have a hard day & I think we'll never survive. But somehow we have made it to this point, and even enjoyed it along the way. My absolute favorite thing is when Tucker & Calvin play together or are nice to each other--without me bribing or threatening. They really are becoming good little friends, and it's so fun to watch!

The biggest, most prominent thing I would say about Calvin right now is that he speaks so well. Maybe it's just because Tucker was the exact opposite, but we feel like Calvin has an exceptionally large vocabulary & speaks so well in sentences & so clearly--he can effectively communicate what he wants, with us understanding him, about 98% of the time. With Tucker at this age (and still now, sometimes...), we had such a hard time understanding him, and it was usually just a guessing game to try to figure out what he was saying. We are constantly amazed at how well Calvin speaks.

I always have a hard time coming up with things to say to describe my kids at various ages, so for now I'm going to use the "25 questions" format that I started using with Tucker--except I'll answer for Calvin instead of having him answer for himself:

  1. What is your favorite color? orange & blue (they are the only colors he recognizes on a consistent basis right now--though he still gets them mixed up sometimes)
  2. What is your favorite toy? trucks, trains, & balls--he LOVES trucks, cars, etc way more than Tucker ever has (we got Calvin a train table with wooden tracks & trains for his birthday, and he could play it all day long)
  3. What is your favorite TV show? WordWorld, Wild Kratts, Clifford (basically whatever Tucker watches) & Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on my phone
  4. What is your favorite thing to eat? breakfast foods and/or anything sweet; he also loves dips & sauces & will try the most random of foods, if there is a dip or sauce involved; he is obsessed with & loves his vitamins--he requests them multiple times a day
  5. What is your favorite thing to wear? his angry birds shirt, or any shirts with trucks, motorcycles, etc on them; oh, and hats--he loves hats
  6. What is your favorite game? taking whatever Tucker is playing with & running away with it, laughing the whole time (he loves to get a rise out of Tucker...)
  7. What is your favorite dessert? ice cream? not sure...
  8. What is your favorite animal? hippopotamus? he doesn't really have a favorite animal, though he randomly has a fascination/obsession with STOP signs
  9. What is your favorite song?  I was passing through radio stations the other day & he heard the song "Scream & Shout" by will.i.am and Britney Spears...and now he keeps asking for the "Bug Song" as he affectionately named it...
  10. What is your favorite book? anything with trucks (current favorites are "My Truck is Stuck" & "Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site")
  11. Who is your best friend? Tucker, Ryan & Brady Bellows
  12. What is your favorite cereal? Wheat Chex with sugar on top
  13. What is your favorite thing to do outside? stomp in the snow, and then eat the snow off the bottom of his shoe..super disgusting (I've caught him doing this way too many times!!)
  14. What is your favorite thing to drink? chocolate milk
  15. What do you want to be when you grow up? Tucker (he wants to do anything & everything that Tucker does!)
  16. What are you afraid of? nursery at church (he still cries & cries whenever we leave him--Curt or I still have to stay the entire time, or we just bring him to class with us)
  17. What’s your favorite thing to do as a family? be together--he doesn't really care what we're doing, but he loves it when Curt is home & we're all together
  18. What’s your favorite activity to do? doing whatever Tucker is doing, except making a much bigger mess out of it (example: if Tucker is drawing, Calvin likes to steal his markers/crayons & draw on the floor/himself, etc)
  19. What makes you happy? his blanket--he is way too attached to his blanket & would take it everywhere, if I let him
  20. What makes you sad? having something taken away from him, or taking him away from something he wants to do (he is perfecting his scream of protest quite well)
  21. What is your favorite movie? he gets bored with TV after awhile, so I don't think he's ever even made it through an entire movie...but "Cars" would probably be the favorite
  22. What is your favorite scripture story? he doesn't really pay attention when we read scriptures as a family, but if it gets close to bedtime & we haven't read yet, he loves to come remind us, "got! scriptures!" (forgot scriptures!) he also loves to say "came pass" (and it came to pass) whenever we raise our hands--the only way we can really get him to participate for now
  23. What is your favorite thing to do with Mom? cuddle--he has been super attached to me lately, and I (most of the time) love it
  24. What is your favorite thing to do with Dad? jump on him
  25. What is something you’d like to learn? he's trying his best to learn letters; since we've been working with Tucker learning his letters & sounds, Calvin has taken an interest in it & loves to say "E, O, P!" whenever he sees a letter--it's pretty hilarious (he actually can fairly consistently recognize E, O, and R, which I think is pretty amazing)

Even with all of his mischievousness, he is such a sweet boy, and very well behaved...for a two-year-old at least. (Example: I can actually let him walk alongside me in the grocery store [unlike other children in our family...], instead of having him stay in the cart, and he'll pretty much stay right by me & come whenever I call him! Amazing!)

We love him so much & are so grateful to have him as a part of our family!!

Tucker - 25 Questions (4 Years Old)

Remember back in January when I asked Tucker 25 questions that I plan on asking him every year? (And each of our other children as well...) I decided to do it every year around his birthday, so here's the next installment since his birthday was last week. I saw on a friend's blog the idea to take a video while asking him the questions, which I LOVE! What a fun way to see how he changes, not only with his answers, but in how he looks, talks, etc!

For those of you looking for 5 minutes to kill, you can watch the video below:

And here are all the answers written out:

  1. What is your favorite color? blue and white
  2. What is your favorite toy? Mater & Lightening McQueen & Finn McMissile (new cars he got for his birthday)
  3. What is your favorite TV show? Curious George
  4. What is your favorite thing to eat? breakfast stuff
  5. What is your favorite thing to wear? the new shirt he was wearing
  6. What is your favorite game? watching Dad play Mario on the Wii
  7. What is your favorite dessert? cake & ice cream
  8. What is your favorite animal? sharks
  9. What is your favorite song?  "I Love to See the Temple"
  10. What is your favorite book? Guess How Much I Love You
  11. Who is your best friend? Ryan (Bellows)
  12. What is your favorite cereal? Reeses Puffs
  13. What is your favorite thing to do outside? draw on the sidewalk with chalk with Ryan
  14. What is your favorite thing to drink? milk
  15. What do you want to be when you grow up? a Dad
  16. What are you afraid of? monsters & monster shadows
  17. What’s your favorite thing to do as a family? hug
  18. What’s your favorite activity to do? play Mario with Dad
  19. What makes you happy? when Mom gives me hugs
  20. What makes you sad? if we ever left him all alone
  21. What is your favorite movie? Despicable Me
  22. What is your favorite scripture story? when Nephi built the ship
  23. What is your favorite thing to do with Mom? play playdough
  24. What is your favorite thing to do with Dad? play Mario
  25. What is something you’d like to learn? about fish & sharks & dolphins & seagulls & why do dolphins eat the same thing as sharks

He cooperated perfectly for the video interview--it was so fun! And fun to see what answers have & haven't changed since January. A lot of the answers were things that happened most recently--his newest toys, clothes, cereal, etc.

And for clarification on playing Mario with Dad (which was the answer on 3 different questions!)--every night we give Tucker 10 minutes before bed where he can choose to do anything he wants with us. Most often he asks to "play" Mario with Dad, which is really just Tucker watching Curt play. So lucky Curt gets to play the Wii for 10 minutes almost every night he's home--it's a tough life being a dad. :)

25 Questions

I saw this awesome idea on Pinterest to ask your child the same 20 questions every year (starting at age 3), and then make a book of all the years of answers. I changed & added some of my own questions to make a total of 25. I'll probably try to do this every year around each child's birthday for as long as they'll let me...or as long as I remember.

So, without any further adieu, here is Tucker's first official 25 questions post:

Some of these answers were complete surprises for me. So funny! He is definitely my child, and he had a hard time coming up with just one answer, hence the reason for multiple answers on a few of the questions. Also, it literally took us 3 days to get through the whole list--after a few questions he'd ask me to please stop asking him questions. What a funny boy. I can't wait to see how his answers change over the years!
